Preheat oven to 400°F. In a skillet, brown 1 pound lean ground beef over medium heat, then drain excess fat.

Add 1 teaspoon garlic powder and 1 medium chopped onion to the skillet. Cook until onion is tender and translucent, stirring occasionally.

Spread the beef and onion mixture evenly in an ungreased 9x13 inch casserole dish.

Layer 2 cups uncooked white rice evenly over the beef mixture. Then spread 8 ounces chopped mushrooms on top.

Pour 21 ounces canned French onion soup and 21 ounces canned beef consommé evenly over the layered ingredients.

Slice 1/2 cup unsalted butter and distribute evenly over the casserole. Cover tightly with foil and bake for 50 minutes.

Remove casserole from oven, stir well. If rice is not fully tender, cover again and bake an additional 10 to 15 minutes. Serve warm.
