Combine ground beef, garlic powder, salt, and black pepper in a mixing bowl and blend by hand until evenly seasoned.

Heat butter in a large skillet over medium heat. Arrange five evenly sized mounds of thinly sliced onions in the skillet.

Form the seasoned beef into five equal balls and place one ball on top of each onion mound.

Using a sturdy spatula, flatten each beef ball firmly over the onions to form thin patties.

Cook patties onion-side down for about 6 minutes until onions are deeply browned. Flip the patties and cook until done to your preferred doneness.

Place a slice of cheddar cheese on the bottom half of each bun. Set the cooked patties with onions on top of the cheese.
